10 Elements and Scrum methodology: key for successful projects Part 2

In our previous blog we talked about what we called core Elements: Change Vision, Governance, Leadership (committed), and Change Culture (understanding) from the perspective of projects being implemented under a Scrum (agile) methodology.

In our blog today we want to start our analysis of the basic Elements, those that operationalize project implementations: Project Team, Change Management, and Change Management Budget. In a future blog we will discuss Communication and Awareness, Methodology (Scrum, in this case), and Performance and Incentives.

But first, we want to remind you of our Symbiosis concept. We initially mentioned it in our April 2019 blog. In that blog, we indicated that there had to be a perfect symbiosis between the Elements that make up the Outer Layer and the basic Elements that appear in the middle of the following graphic so as to be able to successfully implement projects under any project methodology, including Scrum.

Even though Project Team is key and fundamental in a project’s implementation, as concerns Scrum or any other agile methodology, the team becomes critical because the Scrum dynamics requires the team to constantly adapt to generate results in short spurts of time.

The project team has to have the Organization, Company, or entity continue with its everyday work dynamics and that the governance structure with its decision-making instances answer to and define within these dynamics, thereby achieving a perfect symbiosis

This makes it necessary to have a functional change management team as part of the Project Team that plans, executes, evaluates, and directs the human factor activities during a project implementation. Looking to develop a high level of commitment, this functional change management team has to attend to the emotional and motivational impacts both for those on the project as with all those people involved in it.

The stark reality is that the need for a Change Management and a Budget for that purpose increases under Scrum. This is due to its iterative, accelerated, and highly disruptive nature. This makes the people on the project challenge themselves and be more flexible in taking on the “cascade” of changes that the project will bring about.

Without adequately managing the human factor, the possibilities of success are reduced as we are seeing nowadays as to the success of agile projects around the world.
